Neste, ITOCHU and GS Caltex collaborate to make first batch of CORSIA-eligible ISCC-certified sustainable aviation fuel
Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex have introduced the first batch of CORSIA-eligible, ISCC-certified Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Narita International Airport, Japan. This collaboration marks a major step towards decarbonizing aviation by making SAF commercially available to airlines ahead of the 2027 CORSIA mandate. Neste delivered over 1,000 tons of neat SAF to GS Caltex’s refinery in Yeosu, South Korea, where it was blended with conventional jet fuel.
Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex have teamed up to offer the first batch of CORSIA-eligible, ISCC-certified sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for sale at Narita International Airport in Japan. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time CORSIA-certified SAF has been made available for commercial purchase by airlines ahead of the mandatory phase starting in 2027, reported Biofuels International.
As part of this collaboration, Neste delivered over 1,000 tons of neat CORSIA-eligible and ISCC-certified Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to GS Caltex’s refinery in Yeosu, South Korea, where it was blended with conventional jet fuel. This is also the first instance of SAF being blended locally in South Korea. The resulting blended fuel was then transported to Japan, where ITOCHU will supply it to the fuel storage facilities at Narita International Airport. The initial batch will be provided to All Nippon Airlines (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL).
“Sustainable aviation fuel is an immediate solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air travel. CORSIA-eligible SAF allows airlines like ANA and JAL to credibly cut their aviation emissions. This achievement illustrates our collaboration with partners like ITOCHU and GS Caltex, as well as local governments, to develop SAF supply chains that enhance availability in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. We look forward to expanding our cooperation to increase SAF supplies for airlines,” stated Alexander Kueper, vice president of renewable aviation business at Neste.
Tetsuya Yamada, executive officer and chief operating officer of the energy division at ITOCHU Corporation, added, “Through our collaboration with Neste and GS Caltex, we have successfully built an innovative supply chain for delivering CORSIA-eligible fuel to airports in Japan. We believe this initiative will play a crucial role in addressing Japan’s aviation fuel shortage and represents a key step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry. We are committed to working with Neste and GS Caltex to ensure a steady supply of aviation fuel while advancing our shared decarbonization goals.”
