The NFRA is buying maize from small-scale farmers, large traders, and cooperatives at various centers in Sumbawanga, Kalambo, and Nkasi districts. Farmers can expect payment within 5 to 14 days after quality inspection.
SUMBAWANGA: THE National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) Sumbawanga Zonal Office is set to purchase 100,000 tonnes of maize using a new digital system designed to enhance efficiency in grain purchasing operations.
Speaking to reporters, Head of the NFRA Sumbawanga Zonal Office, Mr Marwa Range explained that the new digital system facilitates the rapid and efficient transmission of seller information to relevant departments, simplifying the payment process.
“The agency in Rukwa aims to purchase 100,000 tonnes of maize during this buying season, which started in July this year. All our maize purchasing centres are now using the new digital system to provide better and more efficient services to farmers and clients during purchasing operations,” Mr Range said.
He emphasised that the new system has significantly improved efficiency by quickly sending seller information for prompt processing and payment authorisation.
Mr Range further noted that the NFRA allows small-scale farmers, large-scale traders and cooperative societies to sell their maize at various purchasing centres in Sumbawanga District, including Mazwi, Kanondo and Laela.
Additional centres include Mwimbi, Matai and Mkombo in Kalambo District, as well as Namanyere, Kasu and Ntalamila in Nkasi District.
“The produce is inspected for quality and sellers are paid within five to 14 days, in accordance with government procedures,” he added.
Several farmers who have sold their produce to the agency expressed their hope that the government will ensure timely payments.
Currently, NFRA operates 72 purchasing points across eight regions, including Dodoma, Dar es Salaam (Kipawa), Njombe (Makambako), Songwe, Rukwa (Sumbawanga), Manyara (Babati), Shinyanga and Songea.
