Bathinda : The NGT has impleaded Sanjha Morcha Zira in a petition by pro-environment organisation, Public Action Committee, seeking closure of the distillery and ethanol project near Zira in Punjab, stating it is spreading water and air pollution in the area.

In its recent order, the NGT stated that the presence of Sanja Morcha is essential for just and proper adjudication of environmental questions involved in the case.

The NGT bench comprising judicial member Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Afroz Ahmad directed the Ferozepur district magistrate to inform the Morcha about the decision and directed it to file a reply in a week.

The tribunal has adjourned the matter to December 11, 2023, for further hearing. Earlier, the action taken reports filed by the central and state pollution control boards were taken on record.

Sanjha Morcha has been holding protests since July 2022, accusing the project, Malbros International Private Limited, of causing ailments.

The distillery authorities had prayed for directions to the original applicants/district magistrate, Ferozepur, to ensure that support is provided to NEERI or any other agency/organization appointed for inspection and taking samples from the industry or the surrounding areas.
