No proposal to review restrictions on sugar exports: Sanjeev Chopra
Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra clarified in a media briefing that the government has no plans to lift restrictions on sugar exports. Emphasizing on ensuring sugar availability and maintaining sufficient opening stocks, the government aims to meet its E20 target by 2025-26 through ethanol blending. This decision comes despite requests from ISMA to allow exporting 20 lakh tonnes of sugar this season to bolster liquidity for sugar mills and facilitate timely payments to farmers, promoting economic stability in the sector.
The government is not considering lifting the restrictions on sugar exports. It is prioritizing ensuring sugar availability, maintaining a sufficient opening balance, and meeting its E20 target by 2025-26 through ethanol blending.
During media briefing, Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, “There is no proposal to review a restrictions on export of sugar.”
India had imposed restrictions on sugar exports due to concerns about a poor harvest and high prices.
Recently, ISMA urged the Government to consider permitting the export of 20 lakh tonnes of sugar in the current season. This will improve the financial liquidity of sugar mills and enable timely payments to farmers. ISMA believes that allowing exports will contribute to the smooth functioning of the sugar industry and foster economic stability.
