Pakistan-Bumper wheat crop expected this year: Punjab CM
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz says the Kissan Card has driven a strong agricultural turnaround, enabling record wheat sowing and higher productivity. Farmers accessed Rs100bn in interest-free loans, with major fertiliser purchases boosting confidence. December urea sales rose 37 percent. The scheme strengthens farm inputs, credit access and rural livelihoods.
LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has said that the Kissan Card initiative has triggered a major turnaround in Punjab’s agricultural sector with the province poised to achieve a bumper wheat harvest this year. Citing official data, the chief minister said that Rs100 billion in interest-free loans had been disbursed to farmers through the Kissan Card, significantly improving their access to essential agricultural inputs.
The availability of timely credit, she noted, has encouraged record wheat sowing across Punjab’s fertile farmlands and strengthened farm-level productivity. Briefing the chief minister, officials reported that December witnessed an unprecedented sale of approximately 1.356 million metric tonnes of urea fertiliser, marking a 37 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. The surge in fertiliser uptake, they said, reflected growing farmer confidence and improved purchasing power under the Kissan Card scheme. Of the Rs100bn released so far, Rs65bn has already been utilised by farmers, with Rs47bn spent on fertiliser purchases alone.
Officials said the remaining funds were expected to be absorbed during the ongoing crop cycle, further supporting agricultural output. Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the Kissan Card had not only transformed the agricultural landscape but also restored farmers’ trust in government support mechanisms. “For the first time, farmers have direct access to capital, modern inputs and financial resources without bureaucratic hurdles,” she said. She emphasised that the prosperity of farmers was central to Pakistan’s economic growth, adding that strengthening agriculture remained a top priority of the Punjab government. The chief minister reaffirmed her commitment to expanding farmer-friendly initiatives aimed at boosting productivity, ensuring food security and improving rural livelihoods across the province.
