Pakistan : Federal government imports additional 76,752 metric tonnes of sugar in November
Pakistan imported 76,752 tonnes of sugar in November, bringing total imports to 308,142 tonnes in five months, worth Rs49.42 billion. The government had approved 500,000 tonnes for domestic needs, despite opposition from the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association. Imports were handled by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan with tax exemptions.
The federal government imported an additional 76,752 metric tonnes of sugar in November, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
The statistics show that during the first five months of the current financial year, a total of 308,142 metric tonnes of sugar were imported.
In November alone, sugar worth Rs12.66 billion was brought into the country.
From July to November, overall sugar imports amounted to Rs49.42 billion.
The government had earlier approved the import of 500,000 tonnes of sugar on July 4 to meet domestic demand.
The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association had opposed the government’s decision to import sugar.
The imports were carried out at the official level through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP), and the federal government also granted tax exemptions on imported sugar.
