Pakistan : Import of 250,000MT raw sugar: policy to be submitted to Cabinet


Pakistan’s government has decided to seek Cabinet approval for importing 250,000MT of raw sugar and granted in-principle approval to import 500,000MT of refined sugar, to be processed via the ECC. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized balancing consumer protection and producer interests, while ensuring essential commodities like sugar remain affordable and adequately supplied across the country.
ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting has decided to submit the policy for the import of 250,000MT raw sugar to the Cabinet for approval, and granted in-principle approval for the import of 500,000MT refined sugar, directing the Ministry of National Food Security to have it processed through the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level meeting to review the pricing and supply of essential food items, particularly sugar.
The meeting was attended by Minister for National Food Security, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, senior officials from FBR, FIA, Ministry of Industries and Production, as well as PSMA and provincial representatives.
Dar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of both consumers and producers, and stressed the need to ensure the availability of essential commodities at affordable prices.
