Pakistan : Kissan Ittehad warns govt against reducing wheat price
The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has warned the government about a potential decline in wheat prices, demanding that the Punjab government purchase wheat at Rs 4,000 per maund. They also expressed concerns over the expected drop in wheat production due to climate change and the potential abolition of PASSCO. The growers have threatened not to cultivate wheat next season if their demands are not met. Additionally, they criticized the fixed sugarcane rates, citing sugar mill owners’ influence.
MULTAN: The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has warned the government against decline in price of wheat this year, adding that the growers have unanimously decided not to cultivate wheat during the next crop season.
Addressing a press conference at Multan Press Club on Sunday, PKI Chairman Khalid Hussain Bath said that if the Punjab government did not buy wheat at Rs4,000 per maund, there would be no wheat crop in the future.
He said that the federal government is also going to abolish PASSCO, adding that due to climate change, wheat production is expected to decline this year and the government will have to import wheat.
Khalid Hussain Bath said that the Punjab government has not honoured any of their demands, adding that they demand a wheat rate of Rs4,000 per maund from the Punjab chief minister.
All the provinces except Punjab bought wheat at Rs4,000 per maund, he said, warning that if the government does not buy wheat at Rs4,000 per maund, there will be no wheat crop in the future.
He further said that the sugarcane rate was also fixed at Rs250 to Rs300 per maund at the behest of the sugar mill owners.
