WEB DESK: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to release official wheat stocks to address an ongoing flour shortage in Peshawar and other parts of the province, according to the food department.
Officials said that in the first phase, 136,000 tonnes of wheat will be supplied to flour mills. The government has fixed the price of wheat at Rs10,414 per 100 kilograms to stabilise market rates.
Under the arrangement, flour mills will sell a 20kg bag of flour at Rs2,220. Each bag will carry the official government monogram along with the retail price and other required details to ensure transparency.
The food department has made it mandatory for flour mills to submit daily reports on wheat procurement, milling and flour production. Additionally, daily quotas will be allocated to districts based on population size.
Authorities clarified that flour mills and dealers who have failed to clear outstanding payments under the Ramazan Free Flour Package 2023 will not be eligible to receive government wheat or flour.
Officials said the release of official wheat stocks is aimed at curbing rising flour prices and ensuring uninterrupted supply to consumers across the province.
