Pakistan : Rising Wheat Prices Push Flour Rates Higher

Wheat prices have surged in Lahore’s open market, pushing flour costs higher. Wheat rose Rs300 per maund in a month to Rs4,200, lifting flour prices by about Rs20 per kg. Chakki flour now sells at Rs160/kg, with further increases feared amid weak monitoring.

Wheat prices have increased sharply in the open market, triggering a steady rise in flour rates across Lahore and nearby areas. Over the past month, flour prices have gone up by around Rs. 20 per kilogram, adding to household expenses.

According to market sources, chakki flour is now being sold at Rs. 160 per kilogram, while flour bags supplied by mills have become more expensive by Rs. 150 to Rs. 200. Traders warn that prices may rise further in the coming days if the current trend continues.

The increase follows a noticeable jump in wheat rates, which have reached Rs. 4,200 per maund in the open market. Sources say wheat prices have increased by Rs. 300 per maund within a month, putting pressure on flour mills and retailers.

At present, a 10-kilogram flour bag from flour mills is priced at Rs. 905, while a 20-kilogram bag is selling for Rs. 1,810. Although government-notified rates are available at several locations in Lahore, market monitoring remains weak.

Just a month ago, flour bags were being sold at rates lower than the official price, with a 20-kilogram bag available for around Rs. 1,600. However, in areas away from administrative checks, flour is now being sold at higher prices.

Open white flour and fine flour are also being sold at unchecked rates, according to consumers. Market experts say unless wheat prices stabilize, flour rates are unlikely to come down anytime soon.
