Pakistan : Sindh govt fixes wheat price at Rs3,500 per 40kg

Sindh has set the wheat procurement price at Rs3,500 per 40 kg and unveiled a Rs55 billion relief package for farmers. Measures include DAP and urea distribution per acre, suspension of the triple agricultural tax, and unrestricted wheat transport. The government aims to protect growers, ensure fair returns, and strengthen food security.

The Sindh government on Wednesday announced the official wheat procurement price for the upcoming season, fixing the rate at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms, while unveiling a comprehensive Rs55 billion relief package to support farmers across the province.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that the government aims to protect growers from financial hardship and ensure fair compensation for their produce amid rising input costs.

Under the new package, the provincial government will provide one sack of DAP fertilizer and two sacks of urea per acre to cultivators in order to reduce the burden of high agricultural input prices.

“If our farmers are not supported at this critical time, how will they continue to grow wheat?” the chief minister remarked, emphasizing that agriculture is the backbone of Sindh’s economy.

Murad Ali Shah further clarified that the government has decided to suspend the implementation of the triple tax on agricultural income, restoring the previous 15 percent tax rate to offer relief to growers.

The chief minister stressed that maintaining the wheat support price is vital for national food security. He said that removing the support price would have forced the country to rely on costly imports, as seen in other provinces.

“The previous PPP government’s policy of setting a stable wheat support price ensured that we did not need to import wheat for six years,” he noted.

Shah reiterated that the transportation of wheat within the province would not be restricted, ensuring smooth market access for farmers and traders.
