Pakistan : ‘Wheat grinding operations commence in 770 mills across Punjab’

Wheat grinding has started in 770 flour mills across Punjab, with 514 mills currently receiving subsidised wheat after meeting government criteria. On a single day, 34,500 metric tonnes were milled, supplying two million bags of flour at controlled prices. The policy aims to stabilize supply, ensure price relief, and expand participation in the regulated system.

LAHORE: During the current month, wheat grinding operations have commenced in 770 flour mills across the Punjab province, reflecting a notable increase in activity within the flour milling sector and growing confidence in the government’s policy framework. Out of these, 514 flour mills have been declared eligible to receive subsidised wheat after meeting the government’s prescribed functionality criteria and are receiving wheat at official rates on a daily basis.

Director Food Punjab Amjad Hafeez said this in a statement issued on Monday, claimed that the Punjab government’s policy of supplying wheat to functional flour mills at subsidised rates, as directed by Chief Minister Punjab, is progressing successfully, with tangible positive outcomes now visible on the ground.

Amjad Hafeez disclosed that wheat grinding of 34,500 metric tonnes was carried out today, of which 15,000 metric tonnes were supplied to flour mills by the Punjab government at subsidised rates. As a result of this grinding activity, approximately two million bags of flour have been supplied to the market. Of these, 1.05 million bags, comprising 10kg and 20kg packs, have been made available at controlled prices.

He said that 10kg flour bags are being sold at Rs 905, while 20kg bags are available to consumers at Rs 1,810, providing direct relief to the public amid inflationary pressures.

The director noted that previously, only 415 functional flour mills were availing subsidised wheat, a number that has now increased to 514. This growth, he added, is clear evidence that the chief minister’s policy is proving effective in bringing flour mills into an active, documented and regulated system.

He further said that the government’s strategy is not only instilling discipline within the flour milling sector but is also ensuring uninterrupted supply of flour, price stability, and achievement of the government’s objective of providing direct relief to consumers.

The Punjab government, he added, has made it clear that more flour mills are being encouraged to meet functionality criteria, with expectations that the number of mills receiving subsidised wheat could rise to 770 in the coming days.
