Panipat: Sugarcane farmers demand to continue sugar mill’s operations till April
Panipat: Farmers affiliated with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) staged a protest on Thursday against the closure of the sugar mill in Dahar within 10 days, reported Amar Ujala.
The farmers demand that since a considerable amount of sugarcane has already been planted in the fields, it would not be feasible to complete its harvesting within ten days. Therefore, the sugar mill should continue operating at least until the end of April, allowing all farmers to deliver their sugarcane to the mill. However, officials have stated that considering the amount of sugarcane that has already been bundled by farmers, slips for delivering sugarcane have been issued to all farmers. Farmers have a ten-day window to deliver their sugarcane to the mill.
On Friday, under the leadership of district head Surajbhan, dozens of farmers from Dahar reached the sugar mill and began their protest at the gate. Upon the farmers’ arrival at the gate, the local police officer Israna also arrived at the scene. The farmers demanded that the sugar mill should continue operations until April 30th and that slips for delivering sugarcane to the mill should be issued to those farmers whose sugarcane is still standing in the fields. District head Surajbhan Rawal stated that the sugar mill should purchase sugarcane from all farmers in the district and issue slips to all farmers for delivering sugarcane in an orderly manner. Meanwhile, the mill’s cane manager, Dharampal, assured farmers that all farmers would receive slips promptly.
