Patiala : Wheat sowing starts amid seed crunch
Farmers in Patiala are facing delays in wheat sowing due to a shortage of seeds at cooperative societies, pushing them to buy from private dealers at higher prices. The unavailability could also lead to increased paddy residue burning due to tighter crop cycles. MD Punseed, MS Sidhu, claims stock is sufficient and ready for distribution upon cooperative requisition. The registrar’s office indicated that an official request for seeds would be sent soon to ensure timely distribution to farmers.
Patiala: Farmers are grappling with the unavailability of wheat seeds at cooperative societies. As the wheat sowing season approaches, the state government has purportedly failed to ensure wheat-seed availability at cooperative societies, compelling farmers to procure seeds from private dealers. The farmers asserted that private dealers mandate additional purchases alongside seeds whilst selling them at inflated prices
.Farmer Balwinder Singh explained that numerous farmers undertake early sowing of wheat crop typically during October’s final week, while others sow between November 1 and 15, considered the optimal period for sowing wheat. “The seeds remain unavailable at most cooperative societies, consequently delaying sowing. This delay could reduce the interval between paddy harvesting and wheat sowing, forcing farmers to incinerate paddy residue”, he said.
MD Punseed, MS Sidhu, said they haven’t received requisitions from cooperative societies for wheat seed thus far. He clarified that wheat seed supplies were sufficient, with approximately 80,000 quintals in stock, ready for immediate distribution to cooperative societies within 24 hours. He mentioned that roughly 20,000 quintals had already been dispatched to district agriculture offices. “We can deliver seeds within 24 hours to cooperative societies upon receiving their demand-charter and cheques,” Sidhu said.
When questioned about seed unavailability at cooperative societies statewide, registrar cooperative society Baljinder Kaur indicated that the additional registrar handles this matter and would respond accordingly.Additional registrar cooperative societies, Punjab, Nisha Rana, said: “We are writing soon to the Punseed and demand the wheat seeds so that these are supplied at the earliest to the farmers.”We also published the following articles recently
