PAU’s rice variety gains popularity


Ludhiana: The area under PR-126 is set to increase as farmers prefer this short duration variety over water-guzzling rice. Punjab Agriculture University sold 9,000 quintals of PR-126 seeds this year, nearly double last year’s 4,800 quintals. The university produced 10,000 quintals, with 35 seed sale counters statewide. Last year, PR-126 covered 33% of the state’s rice area. Dr. G S Mangat highlighted the surge in demand for PAU-developed rice varieties.
Ludhiana: The area under PR-126 is likely to increase this year as farmers are giving preference to this short duration variety instead of the water-guzzling rice varieties. This famous short duration variety is in high demand, with Punjab Agriculture University selling 9,000 quintal seeds, which is almost double as compared to last year.
The varsity said that it has produced 10,000 quintals of PR 126 variety seed this year, of which 9,000 quintals have been sold.
Last year, the university sold 4,800 quintals of seeds. The area under PR 126 variety was 33% in the state in the last year. Dr G S Mangat, additional director, research (agriculture), said that the seed of PAU developed rice varieties has witnessed a surge in sales.
“Seeing the popularity of PR 126, the University produced more than 10,000 quintals of seed this year. More than 9,000 quintals have been sold. The university had set up 35 seed sale counters across the state,” he said.
