Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the dangers of obesity, calling it the “root cause of many diseases.” Addressing a gathering in Silvassa, he urged people to cut cooking oil intake by 10% to combat obesity. Stressing upon the importance of staying fit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed obesity as the “root cause of many diseases” even as he shared a report which said nearly “44 crore people in India may be obese by 2050”.
PM Modi was addressing a public gathering at Silvassa town in Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH), part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu located adjoining Gujarat.
Asserting the need to reduce weight, the PM appealed to the people to “reduce the intake of cooking oil by 10 per cent in your daily diet as it leads to obesity”.
“Diseases linked to our lifestyle are posing critical health issues. Obesity is one of them because it is the root cause of many diseases. According to a recent report, nearly 44 crore people in India may be obese by 2050,” said the PM, who is on two-day visit to South Gujarat. Modi reached the Union Territory on Friday where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth Rs 2,587 crore.
Modi also inaugurated the first phase work of the 450-bed NAMO Hospital and Research Centre in Silvassa. The NAMO Hospital (Phase I), built at a cost of Rs 460 crore, is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare services in the Centre-administered territory.
Modi said: “We are marching ahead towards a Vikshit Bharat and for that, a healthy nation is needed. Obesity is growing day by day and it will lead to major illnesses in the future. To get rid of obesity one has to do exercise and also take care of the food.”
“If the intake of cooking oil will be reduced by 10 per cent, this would be the first step to walk in the direction of dealing with the issue,” he said.
