Pokkali farmers urge district administration to take over rice fields

Pokkali rice farmers have urged the district administration to take over flooded coastal fields, citing delays in draining saline water that hinder land preparation ahead of the June rains. In response, authorities have formed monitoring committees at district and taluk levels to oversee timely water drainage and ensure adherence to the ‘one rice, one fish’ cultivation cycle.
Pokkali rice farmers in the district have demanded that the district administration take over the rice fields in coastal areas in view of the situation where the fields continued to be flooded by saline water, in keeping with an order issued by the Pokkali Land Development Agency.
The farmers alleged that the fields had not been fully drained of saline water, preventing land preparation and sowing of seeds with the onset of rain in June.
However, as part of efforts to protect pokkali rice cultivation, the district administration has constituted district- and taluk-level monitoring committees to ensure timely draining of the fields of saline water and monitoring of fish and rice cultivation on the basis of the ‘one rice, one fish cycle’ during the year.
The committees were constituted after farmers complained that the fields continued to be flooded despite the time limit set by the rice cultivation cycle.
