Police seize PDS rice at Katpadi railway station


Around 500 kg of PDS rice was seized from Kakinada-Bengaluru Express at Katpadi station during a surprise GRP check. Acting on Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi’s orders, police discovered 20 gunny sacks near a washroom. CCTV footage revealed suspects who exited without luggage. The rice, reportedly collected from nearby towns, was handed to the Civil Supplies Department.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized around 500 kg of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System from an express train at Katpadi railway station on Wednesday.
Police said that based on orders of Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi, special police teams were formed to prevent PDS rice smuggling in the district. During a surprise check at the railway station, the police team inspected Kakinada – Bengaluru Express train where they found 20 gunny sacks of rice near a washroom in the train. They seized the rice and handed it over to the Katpadi Taluk Supply Officer of the Department of Civil Supplies.
Police analysed CCTV footage in the railway station and found a few persons getting out of the compartment without any luggage and never boarded the train again. Police said PDS rice was collected from the public in towns like Arcot, Walajah, Arani, and surrounding villages.
