Prolonged dry spell in HP impacts sowing of wheat crops

Himachal Pradesh’s prolonged dry spell since October has delayed wheat sowing in lower districts like Una and Kangra, with only 0.7 mm rainfall recorded in October—98% below normal. Other crops, including peas and onions, are also affected. Officials warn of a potential drought-like situation if rains don’t arrive soon, disrupting irrigation and worsening agricultural challenges.

Shimla: Prolonged dry spell in Himachal Pradesh since October has taken a toll on the sowing of crops in the lower districts of the state. While farmers are concerned over the lack of moisture in soil, the agriculture department officials expect a drought-like situation in many parts of the state, if it doesn’t rain.According to the agriculture department officials, the prolonged dry spell has delayed the sowing of wheat in the lower districts of the state.

“The dry weather spell has affected the sowing of wheat, as farmers are concerned over the lack of moisture in the soil in districts, including Una, Hamirpur, Solan and Kangra. If it doesn’t rain in the coming weeks, we might have a drought-like situation in many parts of the state as the irrigation schemes will also be affected,” said the official.Apart from wheat, the lack of rain in the last two months has also impacted other crops, including peas, lentils, garlic, onions and tomatoes. The state witnessed no rainfall this month. In Oct, only 0.7 mm rainfall was recorded, which is 98% less than the normal rain of 36.3 mm. Even last year, the state had witnessed a dry spell for almost four months from Oct to Jan 31, badly impacting sowing and crop production.Tabo was the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, with lowest minimum temperature of -8.8°C.
