Panaji: India stands at the crossroads of an energy shift, where green hydrogen will play a pivotal role in the country’s journey towards sustainability, said Swati Salgaocar, the chairperson of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) western region.Salgaocar said that India can become a global leader in green hydrogen by 2030 if the public and private sectors work together.

“Green hydrogen is going to be the game changer as we look towards decarbonisation,” said Salgaocar. “With strong policy frameworks, public-private partnerships, and innovation, we aim to become a global leader in green hydrogen production by 2030.”Salgaocar, who was speaking at the CII national summit on ‘Catalysing India’s Clean Energy Future’, said that pursuing renewable energy goals, particularly research and production of green hydrogen, will drive economic growth and energy independence.

Goa itself has set an ambitious target to establish pilot projects for green hydrogen and ammonia generation. Chief minister Pramod Sawant made the announcement in his budget speech for 2023-24 but did not provide additional details. As per the state’s clean energy roadmap, govt aims to completely phase out the use of coal and oil for industrial energy by 2050 and replace them with green energy and biomass. These goals are along the lines of the targets set by the Centre.

“I think India has set some bold goals. If you see the green hydrogen mission, we are talking about a target of 5 million metric tonnes per annum by 2030,” said Salgaocar.

She also mentioned that startups will play a significant role by driving innovation and solving critical global challenges. “We will have to converge to create a future that is not only green but also economically vibrant. India has an ambition for leadership in renewable energy and it is at the forefront of this transformation,” said Salgaocar.
