Pune: The Sugar Commissioner of Maharashtra, Dr. Kunal Khemnar, has issued a stern warning to sugar mills across the state, cautioning them against commencing operations before November 15, 2024, for the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season.

This decision was taken during a Ministerial Committee meeting held on September 23, 2024.

The Sugar Commissioner has emphasized that any factory violating this directive by firing up boilers and starting operations before the designated date will face criminal action, with cases to be filed against their Chairmen and Executive Directors.

In accordance with the Sugarcane Control Order of 1966 and the Maharashtra Sugar Factories Order of 1984, all sugar factories must secure a crushing license before they begin processing sugarcane.

This rule is intended to regulate the start of the crushing season and maintain proper order in sugar production. The Sugar Commissioner has reiterated the importance of adhering to this rule and has issued an official circular to the management of both cooperative and private sugar mills, reminding them that they are not permitted to start operations before November 15 under any circumstances.

Police authorities across districts have also been informed about this directive. They have been instructed to take strict action, as recommended by the Regional Sugar Deputy Directors, against any factories found operating before the designated start date.

Criminal cases will be filed against the key officials of such factories if they fail to comply with the government’s orders.

This warning comes as part of the state’s efforts to ensure smooth and regulated operations during the crushing season. The government has authorized Regional Sugar Deputy Directors to monitor compliance and take immediate action where necessary, ensuring that no factories violate the guidelines.
