Punjab: Ajnala sugar mill expansion plan on cards, says minister

Punjab Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal announced plans to expand the state-run Ajnala sugar mill by increasing its crushing capacity and upgrading machinery after meeting with farmers and mill officials. He assured farmers of government support and criticized the Centre for ignoring their demands. The minister also confirmed pending expansion plans for mills in Batala and Gurdaspur.

The government is considering the plan to expand the Ajnala sugar mill, said Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal. He announced after he paid a surprise visit to the state-run sugar mill on Monday.

During his visit, the minister inspected the sugarcane sale process at the mill, engaged with farmers to understand their concerns, and met with mill officials. After a discussion with farmers and the mill management, Dhaliwal confirmed that the mill’s crushing capacity would be increased. He added that the mill’s machinery would be upgraded to ensure that farmers do not face any difficulties.

Dhaliwal noted that previous plans to expand the crushing capacity of mills in Batala and Gurdaspur would move forward after discussions with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The upgrade project expected to begin soon.

Regarding his interaction with farmers, Dhaliwal said that no major issues were raised as the sugarcane crushing process was ongoing and payments were being made. “The important thing is that our sugar is of the best quality in Punjab,” the minister emphasized. He assured farmers that they should continue supporting the cooperative, and the government would stand by them by purchasing their crops and products.

Expressing sympathy for farmers observing Lohri at the dharna site, Dhaliwal criticized the Central government’s stance, which he said was causing hardships for farmers. He also noted that the demands of the farmers had not yet been addressed by the Centre.

He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action and meet the farmers’ demands.
