Punjab: Batala sugar mill increases crushing capacity; set to produce pharma-grade sugar

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will inaugurate the ₹300-crore upgraded Batala cooperative sugar mill today. The mill’s crushing capacity has increased from 1,500 to 3,500 TCD, with potential expansion to 5,000 TCD. It also includes a 14-MW co-generation power plant. This initiative aims to boost farmer incomes, reduce transport costs, and promote regional sugarcane cultivation.

Gurdaspur: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will inaugurate the expanded crushing capacity plant at the Batala cooperative sugar mill today, built at a cost of ₹300 crore. The plant will have a crushing capacity of 3,500 tonnes of cane per day (TCD) and a 14-MW co-generation power project.

Batala MLA and Aam Aadmi Party’s state executive president Amansher Singh (Shery Kalsi) provided details about the project, highlighting that the mill’s capacity has been increased from 1,500 TCD to 3,500 TCD (expandable up to 5,000 TCD). Additionally, the 14-MW co-generation project will enhance the mill’s efficiency and profitability.

The new plant will also manufacture pharma-grade sugar that is likely to be sold at higher price of normal sugar. Of the 14 MW of power produced, 5 MW will be used by the mill, and the remaining 9 MW will be sold to the government grid, creating an additional revenue stream for the mill. This revenue will also help the mill pay sugarcane farmers on time and at a fair price.

Kalsi emphasized the benefits of the project for farmers, stating that the increased capacity will eliminate the need for transporting sugarcane to distant mills, a costly and time-consuming process. The initiative is expected to encourage more sugarcane cultivation in the region and strengthen the economic standing of farmers.

“This upgraded sugar mill will bring significant progress to the Batala region. The day of the inauguration will be remembered as a historic moment for the mill,” Kalsi said.
