PUNJAB : MLA leads protest against Bio-CNG plant

In Jalandhar, Adampur MLA Sukhwinder Singh Kotli led a protest against the proposed bio-CNG plant at Bhogpur sugar mill. The demonstration involved various opposition parties, farm groups, and local residents. Protesters were unable to meet district officials at the administration complex and staged a dharna outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence. They oppose the plant due to concerns about Jalandhar’s solid waste being sent there. Kotli had previously discussed his opposition with Special Chief Secretary VK Singh in Chandigarh.

Jalandhar: Adampur MLA Sukhwinder Singh Kotli spearheaded a protest on Friday against the establishment of a bio-CNG plant at the Bhogpur sugar mill in Jalandhar district, reports Times of India.

The demonstrators, comprising supporters from various opposition parties, farm groups, and residents from Bhogpur town, gathered at the road leading to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s rented residence. The protest lasted for nearly two hours after they were unable to meet any district administration officials.

Earlier in the day, the Congress MLA and his supporters visited the district administration complex (DAC) intending to meet the deputy commissioner or other senior officials. They staged a protest at the DAC, claiming that no officers were available to address their concerns.

Following the protest at the DAC, which lasted for about an hour, Kotli and his group decided to approach the Chief Minister directly. However, they were stopped at a distance from the CM’s residence, prompting them to stage a dharna on the road.

Kotli and the protesters expressed their firm opposition to the bio-CNG plant at the Bhogpur sugar mill. The opposition to the plant intensified after vernacular media reported that solid waste from Jalandhar city would be sent to the bio-CNG plant, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the purpose to be signed shortly.

In response to the public outcry, MLA Kotli had previously met with the Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister VK Singh in Chandigarh to voice his opposition to the reported proposal.
