Punjab: New research and attempts in improving sugarcane crop discussed at seminar
Amritsar: A seminar on ‘traditional and non-traditional approaches to sugarcane improvement’ was held at Khalsa College. It aimed to teach students and teachers about new ways to grow sugarcane better, using Traditional and new techniques, reported Tribune India.
Dr. Gulzar Singh Sanghera, a sugarcane expert from Punjab Agriculture University, talked at the seminar. Rajesh Kumar Raheja, the Cane Commissioner of Punjab, and SS Bajwa, the Assistant Cane Commissioner of Punjab, were also there. They talked about important sugarcane topics like growing faster, resisting damage, and making better juice. They said these methods help make sugarcane better and produce more sugar.
Dr. Sanghera spoke about how mixing different sugarcane types makes new kinds with more genes. He said sugarcane has a big genome, with lots of genes. He also said some sugarcane types can survive on less water for a long time and still make a lot of sugar.
