Rain caused no harm to wheat crop: Farmers

Despite light rain and winds on Saturday evening, wheat crops remain unharmed, say farmers and experts. However, concerns linger over continued bad weather, which could delay harvesting and increase crop moisture. Former agriculture officer Sukhpal Singh noted the importance of dry conditions in coming days. Locals also raised infrastructure issues at mandis, citing lack of proper sheds for crop protection.
Though the city witnessed winds and mild rainfall late on Saturday evening, farmers, who are ready to bring wheat to mandis, said the showers did not cause any harm to the crop, although there was some worry ragarding the weather conditions remaining windy and rainy, which could definitely damage the crop.
Talking to The Tribune, former chief agriculture officer Sukhpal Singh Issewal said the winds and rainfall in the area had not caused harm to the crop. “The only issue is that harvesting could be late at some places. We are only worried for the next few days. It should not rain and winds must not blow. We will face losses if there is moisture content. Till now, the crop is fine,” he said.
Gagandeep Singh, a local customer, said there was no shed at the mandi near Arora Palace. In case, a shed was there, people park their vehicles under it while wheat remains in the open.
