Rains damage standing mango, banana &maize crops in Andhra Pradesh

Unseasonal rains and gales across Andhra Pradesh have severely damaged standing crops, especially mangoes, maize, bananas, and paddy. Mango yield is expected to drop by 30%, with production likely halving in some areas. Despite the damage, prices remain high, with Banginapalli and Rasalu mangoes selling at ₹700–800 per dozen due to reduced supply.

Visakhapatnam: Rains accompanied by gales in parts of the state for the past few days have damaged a large portion of standing crops, including mangoes, maize and
bananas.

Mangoes, that were ready for harvest, fell to the ground in parts of the NTR, Krishna, Eluru, Kakinada, West Godavari, Anakapalle, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.

This apart, the unseasonal rains damaged maize and banana crops as well as paddy stocks in several villages, thus causing loss to the farmers.

“We expected around six tonnes of mango yield per hectare, but the rains and gales have dashed out hopes. The yield will reduce by at least 30 percent,” said mango growers in north Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, banana growers in south coastal Andhra Pradesh expressed that the gales had damaged their standing crops.

Mango is grown in 3.8 lakh hectare in the state with an estimated production of around 46 to 50 lakh tonnes. The average production of mango in the state is 10 to 12 tonnes per hectare, and the production may decline up to six tonnes per hectare, due to rains and pests.

Mango traders said the price of mangoes may not decrease in the coming days due to the low production and the recent damage of the crops.

Currently, the Banginapalli and Rasalu variety of mangoes are currently being sold at Rs 700 to 800 per dozen.
