Rapeseed cultivation in India increased by 4.5% to reach 8 million hectares.
India’s winter crop sowing has reached a record 47.9 million hectares, up 6.1% from last year, supported by strong monsoon moisture. Wheat, rice, rapeseed, and chickpea areas have expanded significantly. Higher planting is expected to boost production, reduce domestic food prices, and potentially cut rapeseed imports.
India is set to set a record for winter crop sowing thanks to abundant soil moisture following strong monsoons. According to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, winter crop acreage has already increased by 6.1% since the beginning of October, reaching 47.9 million hectares, Reuters reports .
Higher planting areas are expected to help India increase crop production and reduce domestic food prices. Increased rapeseed production could also help the world’s largest vegetable oil importer reduce its overseas purchases, the publication notes.
According to India’s Ministry of Agriculture, since sowing began on October 1, Indian farmers have already planted winter crops on 47.9 million hectares, which is 6.1% more than a year ago.
According to the data, 24.14 million hectares were sown with wheat, which is 10.8% more than the previous year, and the area of rice fields increased by 11.4% to 1 million hectares, rapeseed crops reached 8 million hectares, which is 4.5% more than last year , and chickpea crops increased by 3.5% and amounted to 7.8 million hectares.
Rapeseed is the main winter oilseed crop in India, which meets nearly two-thirds of its demand through overseas purchases of palm, soybean and sunflower oil, mainly from Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.
“If the weather remains favorable, especially from mid-January to mid-March, the rapeseed yield could improve this year,” said Ashwini Bansod, vice president of commodity research at Phillip Capital India, a Mumbai-based brokerage.
