Reliance Industries plans to partly replace use of grey hydrogen with green hydrogen

Reliance Industries (RIL), India’s largest company by market value, is advancing its green energy agenda by replacing grey hydrogen with green hydrogen at its Jamnagar refineries in Gujarat. Using self-manufactured solar panels to power electrolysers, RIL aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. Plans include launching new energy projects by year-end and commissioning a 20 GW solar power project by 2025 for green hydrogen production. RIL’s solar giga factory will produce PV modules, cells, wafers, and more, with phased operations set for completion by 2025 alongside a wind turbine manufacturing initiative.

Reliance Industries (RIL), India’s largest company by market value, is preparing its strategy to partially replace grey hydrogen with green hydrogen at its twin refineries in Jamnagar, Gujarat, as part of its upcoming new energy initiatives later this year. The conglomerate, spanning from oil to telecom sectors, plans to use its manufactured solar panels to power electrolysers for green hydrogen production, thereby substituting the current use of grey hydrogen at the refinery, reported Fortune India.

With a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, RIL aims to launch a series of projects by the year-end. It plans to commission a 20-gigawatt (GW) solar power generation project by 2025, exclusively dedicated to green hydrogen production.

As announced by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani during the last annual general meeting, the company’s solar energy ecosystem will involve converting sand into solar PV modules. The solar giga factory will encompass the manufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) modules, cells, wafers, ingots, polysilicon, and glass. RIL intends to operationalize the factory in phases by the end of 2025. Additionally, the company is strategizing to establish a wind turbine manufacturing ecosystem.
