Retail rice prices in Japan drop for 7th straight week

Retail rice prices in Japan have declined for seven consecutive weeks, averaging 3,534 yen (about \$24) per 5 kg by July 6, driven by increased availability from government stockpiles. All regions reported prices under 4,000 yen, with Kyushu and Okinawa posting the lowest at just over 3,000 yen.

Retail rice prices in Japan have fallen for seven weeks in a row, on the back of wider availability of cheaper supplies of the staple grain from government stockpiles.

The agriculture ministry says the average price of rice sold in the week through July 6 was 3,534 yen, or about 24 dollars, per 5 kilograms. That’s a drop of 4.25 percent from the previous week.

The ministry has been publishing private-sector data of rice prices at roughly 6,000 supermarkets, drug stores, home improvement centers and other retailers nationwide.

All nine regions of the country had an average price below the 4,000-yen mark.

Kyushu and Okinawa in the southwest had the lowest average price, at just over 3,000 yen, or less than 21 dollars. That’s down 2 dollars from the previous week.

The next lowest was found in Hokkaido in the north, at less than 3,200 yen, or about 21 dollars, marking a drop of nearly 4 dollars.

The central regions of Tokai and Hokuriku both saw falls below the 4,000-yen mark.

Only the central Shinetsu region had an increase, with its average climbing back above 3,000 yen
