The U.S. ethanol industry set new records in 2024, exporting 1.91 billion gallons of ethanol valued at $7.5 billion, a 36% increase from 2023. Distillers grains exports reached 12.2 million metric tons, valued at $3.2 billion. Canada led ethanol imports, while Mexico remained the top market for distillers grains. The U.S. remained a net ethanol exporter for the 15th year.

Ethanol Export Volume and Overall Export Value Hit Record High

According to new statistical reports released today by the Renewable Fuels Association, the value of the U.S. ethanol industry’s exports rose to a peak of $7.5 billion in 2024, fueled by a record 1.91 billion gallons of ethanol exported in 2024. Meanwhile, distillers grains shipments registered at 12.2 million metric tons, the second highest ever.

For over a decade, RFA’s annual trade summaries have provided industry advocates, policymakers, news media, and the public with the latest data and analysis, demonstrating the importance of U.S. ethanol and distillers grains to the world market.

“2024 proved to be a terrific year for exports of renewable fuels and coproducts as the entire world saw the value of these American-made goods,” said RFA President and CEO Geoff Cooper. “Our industry’s export sales made a remarkably positive contribution to the U.S. trade balance, while boosting farm incomes and supporting communities across rural America. As countries around the globe embrace ethanol as a low-cost solution for improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions, RFA will continue to pursue and protect trade opportunities in a free or fair manner.”

As detailed in the ethanol trade summary report, the 1.91 billion gallons exported in 2024 represented an increase of over 36 percent over 2023. The value of U.S. ethanol exports surged to $4.3 billion, a record high. Shipments to Canada set an annual record for a single destination, tallying over 674 million gallons. The United Kingdom, European Union, India and Colombia were also sizable markets.

U.S. imports of fuel ethanol plunged to just 4 million gallons in 2024, less than one-fifth 2023’s imports and the lowest level in three decades. The U.S. remained a net exporter for the 15th consecutive year, as imports accounted for less than 0.1 percent of domestic consumption.

The second trade summary report released today covers coproduct exports, including distillers grains, a high-protein feed ingredient for livestock and poultry. Distillers grains exports totaled 12.2 million metric tons in 2024, representing 37 percent of domestic production. Export volumes were valued at $3.2 billion.

The U.S. supplied distillers grains to more than 50 countries via 24 domestic ports and exit points. Mexico remained the top export market with a 21 percent share, followed by South Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia. Colombia, the European Union, and Turkey were the largest growth markets in 2024, with increases of 68, 46 and 42 percent respectively, compared to 2023.
