Rice company moves into commercial farming
Rigo Rice, a local company, expands its rice farming with an additional 6000 hectares, now totaling 60 hectares and employing 50 locals. Their recent achievement includes boosting production from 6 to 9.5 tonnes per hectare in six months. LOCAL rice company, Rigo Rice has now moved into commercialized rice farming following the launching of another 6000 hectares of rice fields.
The farm currently has 60 hectares and employed around 50 people most of them are locals living within the area.
Not just that, the company also celebrated an important milestone being able to increase its production from 6 tonnes per hectare which is 6000 kilograms to 9500
kgs in the last six months.
Rigo Rice owner and managing director, Jeffrey Kennedy said this marks an important milestone in the Rigo Rice success story and it is a testament to the fact
that Papua New Guineans can provide their own solution to address food security and wealth creation.
He described the journey as challenging but with the support from the people who believed in the company, Rigo Rice is where it is today going into the future.
Mr Kennedy acknowledged Rigo MP and Minister for National Planning, Sir Ano Pala for the support during the early days of Rigo Rice. Reflecting on the journey, Sir Ano said Mr Kennedy is a prime example of what can be achieved when vision, courage, and determination come together.
‘‘He dared to dream big, took calculated risks, and dedicated himself to transforming these fertile lands into what we see today. His journey showcases the remarkable synergy between private entrepreneurial effort and the supportive framework provided by the government,’’ Sir Ano said.
Commercialization of rice farming in PNG has the ability to domestically generate more than K1.3 billion in jobs and sustainable wealth generation and further generate well over K5 billion in potential export revenue to global markets.
