Rice exporters seek reduction of MEP

In a recent New Delhi meeting, the All India Rice Exports Association (ARIA) addressed challenges facing the rice industry due to the high minimum export price (MEP) of USD 950 for basmati rice and the export ban on non-basmati varieties. With a bumper basmati crop expected in Punjab, Haryana, and northern India, the association advocates reducing the MEP to USD 750 to mitigate potential farmer losses. Additionally, Punjab’s Sewa Kendras will operate from 11 am to 5 pm on August 19 for Raksha Bandhan. Meanwhile, Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) celebrated its foundation day, noting Haryana’s progress in electricity reforms, becoming the second state after Odisha to restructure its power boards into separate distribution, generation, and transmission corporations.

Chandigarh: The new governing body of All India Rice Exports Association (ARIA) held a meeting in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the “challenges” faced by the rice industry due to high minimum export price (MEP) and ban on export of non-basmati rice. A representative of the association said last year, the central govt had fixed the MEP for basmati rice at USD 950.

Punjab, Haryana and north India are expected to have a bumper crop of basmati this year. “Hence, now it is important to reduce the MSP to USD 750 to prevent huge losses to our farmers,” he said.

Chandigarh: Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) chairman Nand Lal Sharma highlighted that Haryana, after Odisha, is the second state in India to make significant strides in electricity reforms.

Addressing the HERC officials and staff at the Panchkula office on its foundation day, Sharma on Friday explained that previously, states managed electricity through boards. These boards were reorganised into separate corporations for distribution, generation, and transmission.
