Rice exports disrupted at Kakinada and Vizag ports
Exports of non-basmati rice from Kakinada port have halted amid Andhra Pradesh’s crackdown on ration rice smuggling. Exporters are now rerouting shipments to ports like Chennai and Kandla, increasing shipping costs. Nearly 60% of Kakinada’s cereal exports were white rice, the main target in smuggling operations, now facing strict scrutiny.
The export of non-basmati rice from the Kakinada port has stopped and has been redirected to other ports as a result of Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to prevent the smuggling of the crop intended for distribution through ration stores, according to exporters and traders. Exporters have expressed concern about the limits after the State government started a similar exercise close to the port of Visakhapatnam.
Due to these constraints, shippers are rerouting their shipments to other ports, such Chennai or Kandla, which raises the cost of shipping. One dealer stated that 60 percent of Kakinada’s total cereal exports were white rice. Nowadays, nearly all exports of white rice are redirected to other ports. White rice is the primary source of the ration rice smuggling issue.
