Rice seized from private warehouse in Mangaluru

Officials seized 500 quintals of rice, including unbranded and branded varieties, from a private warehouse in Dakshina Kannada for lacking valid permits. The raid, conducted by the Food and Civil Supplies Department, followed a tip-off. A case was filed under the Essential Commodities Act against Anugraha Enterprises, and rice samples were sent for lab testing amid misuse suspicions.

Officials of Department of Food and Civil Supplies seized huge quantity of rice stocked at a private warehouse in the city on Monday, according to Anita V. Madlur, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Director of the department.

She told presspersons on Tuesday that the seized stock comprised about 500 quintals of unbranded rice in addition to branded rice like basmati, sona masoori, jeera, boiled, and the like.

“We raided the warehouse behind Rosario College at about 12.30 p.m. on Monday on a complaint that huge quantity of rice was stocked there without valid permission. Rice was seized and a case was booked against Anugraha Enterprises under Essential Commodities Act.”

Samples of rice were sent for laboratory analysis, she said adding that the stock was seized as there was possibility of unbranded rice meant for public distribution stocked in the warehouse. There is a possibility of misuse. Further investigation is on, she said.
