Scandinavian Biogas to build new $75 million worth bio-LNG plant in Sweden

Scandinavian Biogas is investing $75 million in a new bio-LNG plant in Monsteras, Sweden, set to open in Q4 2024. The facility will process 300,000 tonnes of local manure and green mass annually, producing 120 GWh of bio-LNG and refined biofertilizer. The bio-LNG will primarily fuel heavy transport and shipping, replacing 12 million liters of diesel. The project, developed with local farmers, aims to support a sustainable cycle and help Scandinavian Biogas reach its 2030 production goal of 3 TWh.

Scandinavian Biogas, a bio-LNG producer based in Sweden, has announced plans to construct a new bio-LNG plant in Monsteras, Sweden, with an investment of approximately $75 million. The facility is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2024, reported LNGPrime.

In 2021, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency awarded the company’s unit 154 million Swedish crowns ($15 million) in investment support for this bio-LNG project.

At that time, Scandinavian Biogas indicated it was nearing a final investment decision on the project, which is being developed in collaboration with local farmers.

On Tuesday, Scandinavian Biogas revealed that the Portuguese firm Efacec, in partnership with the Swedish company Multibygg, will be responsible for constructing the large biogas plant. Wartsila will provide the technology for gas upgrading and liquefaction.

The new facility will have the capacity to process 300,000 tonnes of local manure and green mass annually, producing around 120 GWh of liquefied biogas or bio-LNG each year.

According to Scandinavian Biogas, the liquefied biogas will primarily be sold as fuel for the heavy transport and shipping sectors, with 120 GWh equating to 12 million liters of diesel. Additionally, the refined biofertilizer will be utilized in local agricultural production to support a sustainable cycle.

Scandinavian Biogas owns approximately 86 percent of the production company Scandinavian Biogas Monsteras, with the remaining share held by local farmers through their company Monsteras Biogas.

The total projected cost for the facility is about 760 million Swedish crowns ($74.6 million). This development is part of Scandinavian Biogas’s broader goal to achieve a production capacity of 3 TWh by 2030, focusing primarily on bio-LNG.
