Kaolack, June 20 (APS) – The State of Senegal intends to boost maize cultivation and support diversification crops as part of the national food sovereignty strategy, the regional director of rural development ( DRDR) from Kaolack, Samba Ndao Tall,

”As part of the national food sovereignty strategy, the State of Senegal intends to boost the cultivation of maize, but also to support diversification crops such as rice, wheat, sunflower oil, palm oil ”, he notably said in an interview with the APS.

The Kaolack region is about two hundred and seventy thousand tons of cereal production, said the DRDR.

It is with this in mind that it has received, for this year’s agricultural campaign, a quota of forty-five equipped tractors, electric pumps and motor pumps, among other agricultural equipment.

“Who says food sovereignty says consumer products. And in these consumer products, cereals, millet, sorghum, maize, rice, among other crop varieties, occupy an important place,” explained Mr. Tall.

He points out that diversification crops will relieve food imports.-

Saying that it is “very satisfied” with the support of the State of Senegal intended for farmers, the DRDR of Kaolack recalls that the State is mobilizing “significant resources” to support producers.

”We are all, technicians and producers, guarantors of the good distribution conditions of these resources. So, let’s ensure that at the level of the distribution commissions, that the work is done correctly, that these commissions, the producers’ organizations and the technicians play their role correctly, so that the distribution of the subsidy is effective,” said he launched.

He admitted the persistence of difficulties in the distribution of subsidies.

“There are always people who mobilize to be able to take advantage of it, especially since it is difficult to make a correct targeting in this kind of case where everyone can stand up to say that he is a farmer”, lamented the technician.

”We must give ourselves the means to be the guarantors of this subsidy, because the State of Senegal has put in place the necessary safeguards. But it is up to us to mobilize and make the necessary effort for there to be more transparency and efficiency,” he insisted.
