South Africa’s 2026 maize harvest seen nearly 1% lower than last year

South Africa’s maize harvest for 2025/26 is projected at 16.51 million tonnes, slightly down by about 1% from the previous season, according to the Crop Estimates Committee. The output includes white maize for human consumption and yellow maize mainly used for animal feed.

March 26 (Reuters) – South African farmers are expected to harvest nearly 1% less maize in the 2025/2026 season compared with the previous one, the government’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said on Thursday.

The CEC’s second summer crop forecast estimated the 2026 maize harvest at 16.51 million metric tons, down from 16.65 million metric tons harvested the season before. The last estimate, on February 26, had put the 2026 harvest at 16.13 million metric tons.

The harvest is expected to consist of 8.76 million metric tons of white maize, for human consumption, and 7.75 million metric tons of yellow maize, used mainly in animal feed.
