Soyabean acreage shifts to maize in parts of MP, total area to rise in India

Soybean acreage in India is expected to rise by 2% in the 2025 kharif season to 119.69 lakh hectares, driven by increases in Maharashtra and Karnataka, SOPA reported. However, parts of Madhya Pradesh have shifted to maize due to better returns. Overall crop condition remains normal across major states.
Indore: Some regions in Madhya Pradesh have reported a shift from soybean cultivation to maize, while other key states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka have seen an increase in soybean acreage, according to a recent survey by the Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA).The total soybean area in India is expected to rise by approximately 2 per cent in the kharif season of 2025, reaching an estimated 119.69 lakh hectare. This increase is mainly attributed to a significant uptick in acreage in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The survey indicated that districts in Madhya Pradesh, including Ashok Nagar, Guna, Shivpuri, Betul, Harda, Khandwa, and Khargone, have reported a transition of some soybean fields to maize crops owing to better remuneration and market demand.DN Pathak, executive director of SOPA in a statement said, “The overall condition of the soybean crop is normal across major soybean-growing states. In Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, crop health is reported to be good, with healthy plant growth observed.”The soybean acreage in Madhya Pradesh stands at 51.9 lakh hectare as on July 31, slightly lower than last year’s figure of 52 lakh hectare, SOPA said.
In Maharashtra, areas such as Nashik and Satara have also seen a shift in some soybean fields to maize, red gram, and cotton.Conversely, soybean acreage has notably increased in Karnataka, with a 13 per cent rise compared to the previous year.SOPA estimates the soybean area in Maharashtra for the current year at 48.2 lakh hectare, compared to 45 lakh hectare in kharif 2024.
