Spring wheat harvest, winter wheat planting in South Dakota following 5-year average pace

For the week ending September 1, 2024, South Dakota had 6.5 suitable fieldwork days. Corn was 55% in good condition, with 92% in dough stage. Soybeans were 53% good, with 94% setting pods. Winter wheat was 5% planted, and spring wheat 93% harvested. Pasture and range conditions rated 31% good, with topsoil moisture 58% adequate.

For the week ending September 1, 2024, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 32% short, 58% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 24% short, 66% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 24% fair, 55% good, and 14% excellent. Corn dough was 92%, near 91% last year and 89% for the five-year average. Dented was 41%, behind 55% last year and 46% average. Mature was 3%, near 7% last year, and behind 8% average.

Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 27% fair, 53% good, and 13% excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 94%, near 95% last year, and equal to average. Dropping leaves was 4%, behind 17% last year and 16% average.

Winter wheat planted was 5%, near 6% last year and 2% average.

Spring wheat harvested was 93%, near 95% last year, and equal to average.

Sorghum condition rated 1% very poor, 7% poor, 23% fair, 69% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 58%, behind 72% last year, and equal to average. Mature was 4%, near 6% last year, and behind 9% average.

Sunflower condition rated 5% very poor, 7% poor, 29% fair, 54% good, and 5% excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dry was 20%, behind 32% last year. Bracts turned yellow was 1%, near 4% last year.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 25% poor, 30% fair, 31% good, and 8% excellent.
