SRA: Philippines sugar output to hit 2 million metric tons

MANILA – The Philippines’ sugar production may exceed two million metric tons (MT), surpassing the Sugar Regulatory Administration’s (SRA) forecast of 1.782 million MT. SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona credited the increase to intensive research, high-yielding varieties, and adjusted harvest timing. Despite El Niño’s drought, sugarcane recovered well, contributing to the estimated 1.84 million MT pre-final output.

MANILA – The country’s sugar production may breach two million metric tons (MT), the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) reported on Monday.

The volume is higher than the SRA’s 1.782 million MT projected output for the cropping year.

In a statement, SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona attributed the positive local output to “intensive research, massive production and distribution of high-yielding varieties.”

“Personally, I was not a believer of SRA varieties in the past but without a doubt, we have produced very high-quality cane varieties that increased our production output,” he said.

To date, the SRA estimated around 1.84 million MT for the country’s pre-final local production volume.

“We were very prudent in our projection because we just came out of a very long drought due to the El Nino and yet, our canes recovered nicely, not to mention the stable sugar prices we’ve had through most of this season,” Azcona said.

Aside from the results of intensified research, Azcona attributed the higher production output to resetting of harvest.

Earlier, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved to move the start of sugar harvest from August to October. (PNA)
