Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has approved financial relief for 235 sugarcane farmers whose crops were destroyed in a series of fires at the Sevanagala Sugar Factory, managed by Lanka Sugar (Pvt.) Limited, reports Newsfirst.
The incidents, reported on August 16, 20, 21, 22, 24 and September 4 and 5, damaged around 19,000 metric tons of sugarcane. As the crop must be processed within 24 hours of burning, milling operations ended on August 30, leaving many farmers without income.
The Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to compensate farmers at a rate of Rs 7,000 per metric ton of fire-damaged cane.
A special committee, including representatives from the Sugarcane Research Institute and Lanka Sugar (Pvt.) Limited, will be formed to assess the extent of losses and confirm the list of affected farmers.
