Sri Lanka : Govt. sets sugarcane purchase rates

Sri Lanka’s Industries Minister Sunil Handunnetti warned sugarcane farmers against political influence and burning crops, stressing that burnt cane fetches only Rs. 5,000 per ton versus Rs. 9,000 for raw cane. He announced plans to distribute sugar in 1kg packs via government offices, introduce corporate packages, and boost exports.

Colombo, Sept. 3 (Daily Mirror) – Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti urged sugarcane farmers not to fall into political traps.

He said that legal action will be taken against those who set fire to sugarcane cultivations, adding that once sugarcane is burned, it becomes unsuitable for further use.

Handunnetti pointed out that one ton of burnt sugarcane will be purchased at Rs. 5,000, while a ton of raw (unburnt) sugarcane will be bought at Rs. 9,000.
