Sri Lanka: No plans to close Sevanagala sugar factory, says Ministry

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development has denied reports of the Sevanagala Sugar Factory’s closure. The Ministry confirmed no such proposal exists and clarified that sugarcane purchases are ongoing. While the factory faced financial setbacks under the previous administration, it is now operating under a new business plan aimed at restoring profitability and ensuring long-term sustainability.

The Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development has dismissed recent media reports claiming that the Sevanagala Sugar Factory is facing closure.

In an official statement, the Ministry clarified that neither company nor the current government has proposed any plans to shut down the factory. It also addressed inaccuracies in the reports regarding sugarcane harvest figures, confirming that the factory continues to purchase the current yield as usual.

Additionally, the statement highlighted that while the factory experienced financial losses under the previous administration, it is now operating under a new business plan designed to restore profitability and ensure long-term sustainability.
