Sri Lanka Ready to export seeds varieties for the first time
The Department of Agriculture and the private sector of this country have conducted research on these new types of seeds and the research on the seeds has been carried out by the experts of the Department of Agriculture.
Also, the improvement and processing of those seeds has been done by the private sector in Sri Lanka by getting the highest technology and expert support.
Accordingly, the Director General of Agriculture Mrs. Malathi Parasuraman informed the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera that for the first time in this year, some of the above-mentioned seeds have been prepared for export.
Yesterday (06) afternoon, the minister observed the research crops at Palvehera CIC seed farm.
The minister who expressed his opinion said that although seeds for various crops have been imported from foreign countries, it should be appreciated that the most suitable seeds are being produced for cultivation in our country.
The MICH 1-2 chilli varieties introduced by the Department of Agriculture are currently yielding very successful harvests across the country. It is possible to get crops for 09 consecutive months from that chili cultivation. The minister also said that based on the success of the research conducted on many other vegetable crops including maize and many fruit varieties, it will be possible to stop the import of seeds to Sri Lanka in the future.
Due to this, the prices of seeds will be reduced by 50 percent. The minister also advised the officials to give the opportunity to the farmers of our country to buy these seeds at a very low price compared to the imported seeds.
