State extends free rice scheme by 5 yrs
Bhubaneswar: The state government on Friday extended
the 5kg free rice scheme under the state food security
scheme (SFSS) for another five years. Total of 9.97 lakh
beneficiaries from 3,14,923 families have been included.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has directed officials to
ensure poor people avail this facility.

The government needs to identify the real beneficiaries of
the interest subvention scheme, according to the think
tank GTRI. The scheme provides a subsidy on pre- and
post-shipment rupee export credit. GTRI suggests that the
scheme may be benefiting a few large entities instead of
MSMEs. A thorough study is needed to determine the
effectiveness of the scheme and whether certain items
should be excluded. The scheme’s low expenditure
suggests it is underused, and GTRI recommends
considering making it permanent or extending it for
another five years.
