Strengthening sugarcane farming: Uttar Pradesh sees good growth in breeder seed nurseries in 8 years
Uttar Pradesh has expanded sugarcane breeder seed nurseries from 150 in 2016–17 to 267 in 2024–25, using sugar mill fields. The state distributed 4.4 crore single buds of new varieties in 2024–25, the highest in India. The Uttar Pradesh government has made good progress in strengthening sugarcane farming in the state, with the number of breeder seed nurseries increased significantly over the past eight years.
In 2016–17, there were just 150 nurseries, but by 2024–25, that number has increased to 267. This growth has been achieved by effectively utilizing sugar mill fields across the state, according to government officials.
As part of a major initiative to boost sugarcane cultivation, the state distributed 4.4 crore single buds of newly developed varieties in 2024–25, the highest in the country compared to breeder seed output by any research institution, reported The Statesman.
This effort is expected to enhance sugarcane productivity, further cementing Uttar Pradesh’s position as one of the leaders in the industry.
To ensure the quality of the seeds, officials explained that a rigorous three-tier certification process is carried out under the supervision of a scientific team. A detailed inspection schedule ensures quality at every stage—from sowing, post-germination (45–60 days), tillering (100–120 days), millable cane formation (180–200 days), to pre-harvest (15–20 days before cutting).
This methodical and scientifically managed process ensures a consistent supply of certified, high-quality seeds, steadily improving sugarcane productivity across the state.
