Sugar industry fears new norms likely to bring back old restrictions
The sugar industry is concerned that the new draft amendments to the sugar production regulations may bring back some controls that were previously removed . The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has proposed the draft ‘The Sugar (Control) Order, 2024’, citing technological advancements in sugar production as the reason for the update .The draft order includes provisions for the government to regulate sugar production, sale, storage, and disposal, as well as inspect and seize sugar products. The ministry has invited stakeholders to comment on the draft by September 23 . A section of the sugar industry fears that the new draft amendments to the nearly six-decade-old regulation regarding production, storage and pricing of sugar may bring back some of the controls that have been progressively brought down over the years. The industry players feel the new norms go against the Rangarajan Committee’s recommendations that proposed freeing the sector from some age-old regulations.
