Sugar prices in the world decrease for the fourth consecutive month

Global sugar prices fell for the fourth consecutive month in June, with the FAO Sugar Price Index dropping 5.2% from May to 103.7 points—the lowest since April 2021. The decline is driven by improved production prospects in Brazil, India, and Thailand, where favorable weather and expanded sugarcane cultivation are expected to boost output and ease supply concerns.

The FAO sugar price index fell by 5.2 percent compared to May. This decrease in prices on the world markets marks the fourth consecutive monthly decline and reached the lowest level since April 2021, according to agronews.ua.

The price decrease reflects improved production prospects in Brazil, India, and Thailand, where favorable weather conditions and expanded planting areas are expected to lead to increased production volumes.

The average value of the FAO sugar price index in June was 103.7 points, which is 5.7 points (5.2 percent) lower than in May. This is the lowest level since April 2021 when the average value was 100.0 points. The decrease was mainly a result of improved supply prospects in key producing countries.

In Brazil, after a slow start to the season, dry weather conditions accelerated harvesting and crushing, which, combined with increased use of sugarcane for sugar production, led to higher-than-expected production in recent weeks and put pressure on lowering global sugar prices.

Furthermore, early and above-average monsoon rains combined with expanded plantings in India and Thailand have improved crop prospects for the 2025/26 season, further contributing to the decline in global prices.
