Sugar prices rise amid supply shortages

Kenya’s sugar prices surged to Sh166.45 per kilogram in February 2025, a 3.16% rise from January, driven by factory closures, reduced imports, and maintenance shutdowns. The import ban from outside COMESA and EAC, enforced since September 2024, has further tightened supply, despite improved local production.

The average price of a kilogram of sugar jumped to Sh166.45 in February 2025, marking a Sh5.11 rise compared to January, partly fuelled by demand pressure due to factory closures, shelved imports and factory shutdowns for routine maintenance.

Data by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that sugar prices have jumped 3.16 percent between January and February. A kilo of sugar sold at an average of 161.34 shillings in January. Kenya in September 2024 banned sugar imports from outside the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the East African Community amid improved local production.
